Archaeologists to excavate car park site in Totnes town centre

The car park on Station Road in Totnes will be closed for up to four days next week as archaeologists begin work to explore the site for ancient artefacts. All legal rights of access will be maintained during the dig, which will begin on Monday 18th November and continue for up to four days. This will enable parking to be re-instated ahead of the market day and the peak Christmas shopping period.

The Station Road car park is in an area of archaeological interest, and also in close proximity to Totnes Priory which is a scheduled ancient monument. During the public consultation for Churchill Living’s proposed new development on the site, the town council, Local Authority and other local stakeholders expressed a strong wish for archaeological trenching to be undertaken throughout the site. It was requested that this work be undertaken ahead of a planning application being submitted.

This trenching will allow detailed analysis of the archaeological potential of the site.  The final report will form part of the planning submission to the Local Authority.
