Churchill Living’s development in the heart of Barnstaple has been officially named Barum Lodge after the local community were invited to submit potential names for the site.
The name, submitted by Sara Warne, gives a nod to the history of the town. Barnstaple itself used to be referred to as Barum, a shortened version of the Latin name ad Barnastapolitum. The name will resonate with local Barnstaple RFC fans, who play close to the development and are known as The Mighty Barum. The lucky winner Sara received a £100 cheque as her prize for entering the winning name.
Planning permission has been granted for the Lodge, with construction expected to commence in late 2023. The development will comprise of 75 one- and two-bedroom apartments, and offer Owners views of the town centre, waterfront and surrounding countryside.
Barnstaple’s history is unmissable throughout the town. Buildings such as St Anne’s Chapel, Barnstaple Castle and The Georgian Guildhall date back several centuries. Those who want to spend their retirement in the great outdoors can do so, with the popular beaches of Woolacombe and Croyde within 10 miles, as well as easy access to the River Taw, SW Coastal Path and 180-mile Tarka Trail.
Each apartment is fully self-contained, ensuring peace and privacy when it is desired. Owners will also benefit from a 24-hour call centre support system, free parking, energy efficient heating and a secure camera entry system. There is also an exclusive Owner’s Lounge, complete with a coffee bar, where views of the landscaped gardens can be enjoyed. As well as that, Owners will have access to a Guest Suite for visiting friends and family to use.
Caroline Haswell, Regional Marketing Manager for Churchill Living South West comments: “We love getting the local community involved in our new developments and the competition to name Barum Lodge was a great way to do this. The name really highlights the rich history of the town, that we hope future Owners will enjoy”.
