A Year 10 student at Penair Secondary School in Truro has turned teacher to share computer skills with Owners at Churchill Living’s Tregolls Lodge development in the town.
Charlie Wilson has spent three months volunteering each week to help mature novices at the Lodge learn new computer skills and address any IT issues. He explains: “I’ve been working towards my Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award, which requires me to undertake three sections; learning a new skill, taking part in a physical activity and volunteering in the local community. I thought it would be a great idea to provide tech support to the older generation, and as I live really close to Tregolls Lodge, I thought it would be a great opportunity.
I’ve visited every Monday after school and have helped with all sorts of areas. I’ve shown Owners how to use iPads, access websites, download photos, print documents and keep in touch with friends and family using social media and Skype; whatever they need help with really. It’s been great to be able to share my skills and knowledge with other people and know I’m doing something practical to help them.
Charlie’s mum, Alison, said: “Charlie has really enjoyed visiting the Lodge. He’s learnt some very valuable lessons and his confidence speaking to adults has improved no end. The Lodge Manager Cheryl has said how much they’ve enjoyed his company. He’s now continuing and working towards his Silver Award, but I’m sure he’ll be popping into Tregolls Lodge again soon.”
Lodge Manager, Cheryl Hinton said: “Several of our Owners have had one-to-one lessons with Charlie and have found the sessions extremely useful. Bringing different age groups together is a great way to help break down barriers and address misconceptions."
Statistics have also shown that one in five people aged 55 to 64 have never used the internet and this rises to three in five for the over 65s. Learning how to keep up to date with modern technology can be extremely empowering and boost confidence.
Tregolls Lodge is a collection of 59 one and two bedroom privately owned retirement apartments, designed exclusively for the over 60s. Located on St. Clements Hill, the development is in a convenient location close to local shops and amenities, providing safe and independent living.
