When retirees Val and Derek Carter decided to start a new life on the English Riviera, they knew a low maintenance retirement apartment would give them more free time for the things they enjoy. However, it was the stunning balcony views that clinched their decision to move to Churchill’s Sachs Lodge in the Wellswood area of Torquay.
“We saw the view and that was it – decision made!” Val recalls. “The apartment is warm and cosy and very comfortable, but it’s the large balcony and the view that really makes it special. We used to live in north London and had a balcony overlooking the famous Wembley arch, but our balcony here is bigger and the view is even better.”
“We both had family in Devon so we know and love the area,” Val continues. “We wanted to be near the sea and Torquay is such a lovely town. We moved in last summer and despite Covid-19 it was not a problem thanks to all the help we got from Churchill. Their sales team supported us with everything, including a few legal obstacles with selling our old place, and the free moving service Churchill provided was absolutely first class. They were so considerate and took care of everything so we didn’t have to worry.”
Despite the various lockdown interfering with their social life, the couple have managed to meet some of their new neighbours. “Everyone we have met seems nice and friendly, and Jo is so helpful- nothing is too much trouble for her,” says Val. “The Lodge's weekly Tai Chi session is temporarily on hold, so is the general knowledge quiz which Derek presents in collaboration with Lodge manager Jo, and all the other social activities. For now Derek still enjoys walking along the coastal path and I am quite happy relaxing on our lovely balcony and enjoying the view.”
